Imagine a Future Without Cancer
Thanks to the generosity of the Arkansas Legislature and our many supporters, our expansion is scheduled to open in 2010. Ultimately, the new building will double our capacity for research and treatment. In April 2007, Gov. Mike Beebe signed a bill allowing the state to provide up to $46 million in matching funds to build the 12-story expansion to the Cancer Institute. Gifts of any amount to the building or endowment given through June 30, 2009, qualify for the matching funds. The 300,000-square-foot expansion is designed specifically for the team approach to health care, with one floor designed for what we call multidisciplinary clinics. On some days the floor can be used for clinics with a large patient volume, such as the breast clinic, and on other days it can be converted into separate, smaller clinics. The multidisciplinary clinic will not only allow patients to be seen in one location by several health care providers, it also will allow our staff better opportunities to confer and exchange ideas. Research space also is designed with collaboration in mind. This will be increasingly important as we work across disciplines to continue our research in areas such as breast cancer, colon cancer and multiple myeloma, and as we expand our research in areas including leukemia/lymphoma. Thank you for your interest in the Cancer Institute and please join us as we look forward to the opening of our new facility and the many opportunities it will bring. Peter D.
