CIS Resources

Live Help is a real time instant messaging service where cancer patients can get answers to questions from cancer professionals online.

Ask the CIS is a monthly column featuring questions and answers on everything from treatment and research to coping with cancer.

Request publications or literature to be mailed on specific topics or questions of interest.

CIS Partnership Program is a resource for community organizations that are developing or organizing cancer education and outreach to the public.

The National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service (CIS) provides cancer patients, their family and friends, health professionals, and the public with the latest information about cancer. The CIS coordinator for Arkansas is based at the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.

The CIS is the National Cancer Institute’s link to the public, providing clear and understandable information about cancer research and findings. The national network of 14 regional CIS offices serves the entire United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. To receive a personalized response to questions about cancer, the public is encouraged to call the CIS at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6231) to speak with a Cancer Information Specialist. Hearing impaired callers with TTY equipment can call 1-800-332-8615.

In addition to the phone numbers, the CIS also provides an internet instant messaging service called Live Help where cancer professionals provide personalized cancer information to the public. Both services are available Monday through Friday, 8 AM – 4 PM CST.

The CIS offers the following services:

  • Personalized, confidential responses to your questions about cancer
  • Free literature and pamphlets from a variety of organizations
  • Links to additional resources for cancer education

In addition, the CIS provides the following information:

  • Cancer screening, early detection, and prevention
  • Cancer sites, treatment options, clinical trials
  • Coping with cancer
  • Cancer statistics

Arkansas is served by the CIS Mid South Regional Office, located at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, Ky. The Mid South office also serves Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The CIS Coordinator for Arkansas, Misty Smith, can be reached at (501) 686-6479.
